If you’re like me you’re working from home a lot more often, and you may have finally upgraded that old dining room chair to a proper ergonomic home office chair. But if it’s on wheels, you may be struggling with rolling on carpet, or slowly watching the wheels on your chair destroy your hardwood floors. Oh no!

Here are two ways to make sure your office chair is friends with your floors:

1) A rolling chair on carpet

Wheels don’t work well when they are sinking into fluffy carpet. The simple solution? Adding a chair mat that is made for carpet, like this one from Wayfair. These mats have little teeth on the underside that hold them in place, so the mat will stay put while you roll up to your desk.

2) A rolling chair on wood

Wheels work *really* well on wood, but can destroy your floors as you grind little bits of sand and dirt between your home office chair wheels and the flooring! You can use a standard clear or brown mat to protect your floors, but now there are stylish options too, like the area-rug-style Rug’d mats from Anji Mountain!

3) A rolling chair on area rugs

If you want more impact than you’ll get from a 3′ by 4′ chair mat, then an area rug is for you. Area rugs not only protect your floors, but add a lot of visual interest to a room, define a workspace (great if you are creating a multi-purpose room), and soften sound so you have less echo during Zoom calls. The key is to look for low-pile area rugs so your chair will roll easily.
