As *interior* designers we don’t often help with spaces *outside* the home, but this time we were called on to help not only with the inside spaces, but also with setting a fun and friendly mood at the entrance to this new basement space.
The challenge? Making a narrow staircase leading down to the entrance door, flanked by two plain concrete foundations, feel inviting and cheerful. The solution? Using cedar fencing boards to create a feature wall at the base of the stairs with horizontal lines to visually broaden the space. The horizontal lines, the friendly orange of the cedar, ledges to hold brightly colored pots, and a light fixture with a bright, satin nickel finish, took what could have been a depressing, uninviting entry and made it feel like a destination!
Of course, the inside got quite the transformation, too. What started as a completely gutted, unfinished basement…
…just needed some simple, modern finishes, like easy-care LVP flooring by DuChateau. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring provides the warm look and modern styling of wood, without the cost or problems of using wood in this kind of space. The thin profile helps avoid losing ceiling height, and the vinyl composition is perfectly suited to spaces that might have moisture fluctuations {like basements} and need to be durable and cost effective {like rec rooms or rental spaces}.
On the other side of the main room, just as gutted…
…we helped choose kitchen materials that would feel modern, bright, and interesting without being *too* personal (in case the family decides to rent out the space down the road).
Then, last but not least, we helped choose finishes for the bathroom to partner beautifully with the other rooms, making the whole space feel thoughtfully planned and live as large as possible.
The large format shower tiles provide an easy-to clean surface, the 3″ hexagonal shower floor tile adds modern whimsy, and the beautiful glass accent set in a striking and unusual large rectangle that surrounds the shampoo niche makes the room feel far from ordinary.
